As Close as Kate gets to Politics

Watching the scenes of jubilant Iraqis in Baghdad made me smile. At least *someone* is happy about this war. I mean, the result of it.

Try to imagine such a scene in Canada, people shouting and waving, expressing themselves with such joyful exuberance. Or shaking their fists and hollering, spewing hate and anger.

Can’t see it, except maybe at a hockey game. We are way too frickin docile. Or is it that we have not had, as a society, such suffering as they have, such reason to complain, or now such reason to rejoice?

Maybe we really do live in the best place on the planet.

There is a lot of talk in the media about Canadian anti-Americanism (oh my, the Americans will quit trading with us!). It’s the topic of the day on public radio, next to this week’s statue-toppling newscasts. People don’t like the bullying, self-serving nature of American foreign policy. Lots of Americans don’t like it either.

Perhaps the new influence of instant communication nationally and globally, and the organizing, rallying power that goes with it, is going to begin to effect the changes that your average person on the street wants to see.

Then again, look at the number of people around the world who demonstrated for peace, when the invasion of Iraq threatened. It's unprecedented in history, apparently, but did it change anything?

I'd like to think we are getting that thing, that consciousness — what is it called? where on a remote island one monkey “gets it” (figures out a new method to do something) and then another monkey “gets it” and here and there a monkey “gets it” and then magically, all the monkeys everywhere, even on other islands, “get it.”

Once that enlightened consciousness takes hold the way the monkey’s new tool did, voila!

That’s my story and I’m stickin to it.

~~~ From the movie Kama Sutra ~~~
“Knowing Love, I will
allow all things to come and go,
to be as supple as the wind,
and take everything that comes
with great courage.
As Rasa would say to me:
‘Life is right in any case.’
My heart is as open as the sky.”
