Time for Long Underwear

2 p.m.

What a gorgeous fall day. But make no mistake: it is fall. Where there is breeze, the air is icy and cuts through the heavy lined plaid of my red hunter’s jacket. Barney and I went to the garden and dug the carrots and turnips, laying them on top of the ground to dry for a few hours. I had my jacket buttoned up to the neck when we went out, and as soon as I started digging, it had to come off.

Then we went for a lovely walk past the rows of bales on “the hill” and around through the horse pasture that’s across the driveway in front of our house. I called it an enchanted forest last time we walked there, so now it has that impression for my little boy and he likes to go there with me.

I did have to sit and rest once, though, because my lungs still feel heavy. It was a little scary, feeling that way, out there. But it’s happened a few times since I caught that cold a while ago. I hope it passes soon.
